This Mercer work-life balance infographic shares additional insights from its annual What's Working survey -- namely, that workloads are heavier, and employees consider flexible work arrangements as essential to their motivation and engagement. Women are more likely than men to prioritize the ability to work flexibly (71 percent versus 66 percent), as are workers between the ages of 16 and 24 compared with all U.S. workers (69 percent versus 61 percent).

"We also found that work-life balance ranks as one of the top factors influencing employee motivation and engagement in the U.S.," said Bruce Barge of Mercer. "Employees are willing to work hard, but they also want work arrangements to reflect and accommodate their personal lives."
