It's a fine line between doing what needs to get done and stepping on someone's toes or doing something that you're "not supposed to." But no one gets anywhere if they ask for permission. As Grace Hopper once said, "It is easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to get permission." It's better to apologize for knocking down the wall than it is to ask if you can or should.
