Thursday Thought: Why Your Job Requires Emotional Intelligence
Jobs are changing rapidly and, even in the next decade or so, we're going to see massive shifts in how people work and the nature of jobs in general. Part of this is because of the gig economy and surge of the side hustle. The other part will be due to technological advancements and, essentially, technology taking over the roles of humans in many situations. The one thing technology can't do, however, is form and nurture relationships.
Jacob Morgan, author of The Future of Work: Attract New Talent, Build Better Leaders, and Create a Competitive Organization, and cofounder of The Future of Work Community, told Fast Company that building strong connections with coworkers and clients is a skill that will make you stand out in a highly competitive world.
"We are very good, in our schools, at teaching people the strategic aspects of how work should get done, how to build strategies, how to compete, how to do all that sort of stuff. We don't do a good enough job teaching people the human, the relationship side of business," Morgan said.
It's this human side that will give people the upper hand against the future technology that will be able to mimic many other human skills. The emotional intelligent will be the ones who stand out.
