Most offices now laugh at the idea of a mere 40-hour workweek, but Inc. recently profiled BambooHR, a startup that explicitly prohibits its employees for putting in more than the standard eight-hour workday.

"We trade a strict adherence to a 40-hour workweek for all employees in return for their commitment to making all of those hours productive and efficient," cofounder Ryan Sanders told Inc.

That seems a fair trade-off to me: Commit to me that you'll give an all-out effort while you're here, and I won't ask you to stay a moment longer than is standard. This practice also tells the employee, "I trust that you can manage your time at work effectively, and I respect you as a team member."

Better yet, though, is a ROWE, in which businesses focus on employees' results rather than the time they spend at work.
