The Rule of 3 is a productivity tactic that has you outlining your long and short-term goals. By making your goals clear, you are making yourself accountable and you know exactly what you are working toward.
The Rule of 3 involves the following steps.
1. Identify 3 Goals for the Year
These are the long-term goals you want to achieve in the next 12 months. This can include anything from increasing sales by 20%, becoming fluent in a new language or learning a new skill.
3. Identify 3 Goals for the Week
At the beginning of every week, take a look at all the things (small and large) you want to achieve in the next seven days. Then, identify the three that are the most important to you. Examples include completing a report, getting a certain amount of exercise, or completing a new marking plan.
3. Identify 3 Goals for the Day
At the beginning of each day, identify three distinct things you want to complete that day. Sure, your to-do list is full of tasks that will consume your day, but these are the Most Important Tasks (MITs). These can include items like completing a feature article, brainstorming for a new project or making a certain number of client calls.
At the end of each week, reflect on your progress and identify which aspects of your goals are going well and which need more of your attention. This will help you stay on track and give you a sense of accomplishment, no matter how small some goals may seem.
