This Company is Paying Employees to Sleep More
Health care insurance company Aetna has come up with a creative way to encourage employees to sleep more. If employees can prove they regularly get at least seven hours of sleep, they'll be rewarded with up to $500 a year.
"If they can prove they get 20 nights of sleep for seven hours or more in a row, we will give them $25 a night, up $500 a year," Chairman and CEO Mark Bertolini said during an interview with CNBC's Squawk Box.
Aetna is helping employees keep track of their sleep patterns by providing devices like the Fitbit.
"If we can make … business fundamentals better by investing in our people, then that's going to show up in our revenue," Bertolini said. "It's going to show up in our bottom line and the Street's confidence that we can do it quarter, after quarter, after quarter; year after year."
He added that Aetna's health and wellness program as added "69 minutes more a month of [worker] productivity on the part of us just investing in wellness and mindfulness."
