A recent survey commissioned by Adobe reveals that productivity and creativity are at odds in today’s professional environment. Although 80 percent of the 5,000 respondents indicated that unlocking creativity is “critical” to a flourishing, growing economy, just 25 percent felt that they are living up to their potential from a creativity standpoint.

The Adobe study also revealed that organizations’ focus on productivity is putting a damper on creativity: some 75 percent indicated that their workplace pressures them to be productive, not creative. What’s more, 25 percent of workers’ time is spent on creating things.

How can managers incentivize productivity without stifling creativity? By recognizing that the two can live harmoniously with the right mix of freedom and focus. Here’s some recommended reading to that end:
