Earlier this week, Brian Kibby shared a truth that will be hard for many managers to swallow: they are chasing their best workers away. “People leave their manager and not their company,” he wrote, adding, “I cannot think of one instance where this hypothesis was wrong.”

Managers who lose top talent aren’t inherently bad leaders; Kibby notes that resilient leaders can bounce back and use the experience to develop themselves. I’ve been on both sides of the coin — I’ve left employers and experienced employee attrition as a manager — and in every case, I can pinpoint key management miscues.
